Jail terms for baby trafficking

Three ex-hospital officials accused of serious dereliction of duty in a baby trafficking case in northwest China's Shaanxi Province were sentenced to jail yesterday.迷你倉Si Xin, former delivery room head at the Fuping County Maternal and Child Health Care Hospital, was jailed for one year.She took orders from obstetrician Zhang Shuxia and carried the newborn babies out of the delivery room, which was a violation of rules and led to baby trafficking, the Linwei District People's Court said in Weinan City. Si has appealed the ruling, the People's Daily website reported yesterday.Two others were also sentenced by the court yesterday.Former director of the hospital's department of obstetrics Gao Wenping was sentenced to a year in jail ,with two years' reprieve.Former deputy president of the hospital Yao Junmin was given six months in prison with one-year reprieve.Wang Li, former president of the hospital, was exempt from punishment though also convicted of dereliction of duty.The four were given lenient terms or exempted criminal punishment as they "demonstrated good attitude in pleading guilty and took repentant steps," the court said.In Wang's case, there was "insufficient evidence to prove she 儲存倉ad intentionally covered up the baby trafficking, though she failed to discover the crimes," Wang's lawyer told the court.On January 14, Zhang was sentenced to death with two years' reprieve for selling seven babies, one of whom died later, to human traffickers after lying to their parents that the babies were born with fatal diseases and defects in persuading them to give them up.The other six children, including twins, have been rescued and returned to their families.The case stirred public outrage after Zhang was exposed in July, when a mother, surnamed Dong, suspected her newborn had been abducted.She reported the incident to police.Zhang had persuaded Dong and her husband to give up their boy after falsely claiming the child had a congenital disease.The baby was found in good condition in neighboring Henan Province on August 5.Two twin baby girls were also rescued from neighboring Shanxi and Shandong provinces on August 10 after their mother contacted police in Fuping.In less than a month after the scandal came to light, police received reports of 55 cases of infant trafficking.Zhang was allegedly involved in 26 of them but police found evidence of her involvement in just six of them.迷你倉最平
