Local pro-lifers preparing to march on D.C.

Wade legalized abortion, but the pro-life movement to see the decision reversed continues.The annual March for Life scheduled Jan. 22 in Washington, D.C., is expected to attract hundreds of thousands of people who turn out in hopes of seeing abortion laws changed.Local organizers plan to take nine busloads, but that number could change depending on the interest of marchers from Cambria and Somerset counties. The buses will depart between 6:30 and 7:30 a.m.Boarding sites include locations in Northern Cambria, Ebensburg, Cresson, Nicktown, St. Benedict, New Germany, Carrolltown, Loretto, Richland Township, Johnstown's West End, Windber, Hooversville and Somerset.Pat Mulcahy of Windber, who has been coordinating the bus trips for many years, said a big change he's noticed is the increased number of younger people, middle and high school and college age, participating in the march."The attitude of younger people toward abortion has changed quite a bit, and I think that's because more information is out there," he said. "I definitely see this as a positive thing."Ev儲存n though it's been a slow process, Mulcahy believes that strides are being made in the fight to end abortion and that efforts like the march serve to increase the pro-life message."If nothing else, it's worth it for the education and keeps awareness up in the community," he said.March participants will have an opportunity to meet with local congressmen and share their thoughts and concerns."We're fortunate that almost all politicians from our area see things our way," Mulcahy said.Although many of the same people attend year after year, Mulcahy said new people are getting involved, from those helping to coordinate buses to individuals who will be making the trip for the first time."I hope they'll realize what's going on and what it'll take to make changes, because it's more important now than ever," he said.For more information on bus sites, call Mulcahy at 269-1470.Kelly Urban is a reporter with The Tribune-Democrat.
