GIRLS BASKETBALL: Bushland ends Permian comeback in OT

Source: Odessa American, TexasDec.self storage 27--MIDLAND Permian's girls basketball team showed plenty of Mojo on Thursday at the Byron Johnston Holiday Classic, rallying from a double-digit deficit and even holding a lead over Class 2A Bushland in the final seconds of the game.It was the Lady Falcons, however, who had the magical finish.Bushland forced two Permian turnovers in the last 38 seconds of regulation and scored to send the game into overtime, then came up with four more turnovers in the extra frame and cashed in to edge the Lady Panthers 63-62 at the Midland High School gymnasium."It was crazy," Bushland head coach Scott Tankersley said. "I'm so proud of the girls, because we're a small school and we were playing a big school. It could have gone either way. It just came down to the last team to have the basketball."Bushland (5-2) led by as many as 10 in the first half but witnessed the Lady Panthers (6-6) mount a furious comeback, outscoring the Lady Falcons 13-2 over the final four minutes, 23 seconds, of the second quarter.Permian took a 26-25 lead into halftime and appeared to have all the momentum entering the second half.Jasmine Watkins scored seven of her game-high 16 points during the span and added five more to open the second half, as the Lady Panthers increased their advantage to as many as seven points.Eight different players got in on the scoring including Tatanesha Fleming, who finished with 15, Te'Ana Washington with 13 and Latasha Griffin 10."We were playing team ball and we were doing pretty well," Fleming said. "We fought and we were trying to finish. I think we just got frustrated in the end because it was so close."Bushland meanwhile, continued to chip away at the Lady Panthers, cutting into the deficit one and two points at a time."We substituted a lot," Tankersley said. "Every 30 seconds I was sending fresh play迷利倉rs in, we worked on our system and the kids stayed with it. It helped when (Washington) got into a little bit of foul trouble, too. She's a good player."Along with 15 second-half turnovers, Permian committed 15 fouls in the second half and overtime, with Washington fouling in the last 30 seconds of regulation as the Lady Panthers led 57-56.Bushland's Kaitlin Bauer, who scored a team-high 14 points, connected on one of two free throws to send the game into overtime, then led the Lady Falcons to the upset finish.Bauer scored four of Bushland's six points in overtime period. Lauren Mayer and Emily Chapman each finished with eight points and Bailee Barber had seven."(Bushland) turned on the pressure a little bit and we just made some bad decisions," Permian head coach Angela Braziel said. "We got a little hesitant and tried to force it. There are just some little things we have to work on through the course of this tournament, mainly being poised under pressure."Permian netted five points in overtime, including Watkins' final two-pointer that left the Lady Panthers one point shy as the final buzzer sounded."I think we learned a lot about stressful situations and the kind of personnel you want to have out there," Braziel said.
