Redeemer gets boost from win

Source: The Times Leader, Wilkes-Barre, Pa.self storageJan. 12--WILKES-BARRE -- Holy Redeemer picked up more than a victory Saturday night. The Royals gained another boost of confidence. The big guys did their jobs and guard Darius Washington helped the Royals ease away in the third quarter as they defeated Nanticoke 74-63 in a Wyoming Valley Conference Division II boys basketball game.Redeemer (2-1 Div. II, 4-7 overall) won for a second consecutive night after a streak of four consecutive losses."It's starting to look a little better now," Redeemer first-year coach Paul Guido said. "We had that grinder of an exhibition schedule that I think in the long run is going to help us. But while you're going through that process, you kind of lose your confidence and get shaken a little bit."Washington showed confidence in his three-point shooting after he ended the first half with a buzzer-beater from beyond the arc. That gave Redeemer a 30-24 lead going into the third quarter, and the advantage swelled to 54-36 late in the period as Washington knocked down three more.As for the big guys, they dominated the paint, outrebounding Nanticoke 24-11 in the first half. John Kane, a 6-foot-5 senior, paced Redeemer with 12 boards followed by seven each from 6-foot-8 Mike Prociak and 6-3 Brian Banas. Banas also scored 20 points."We knew we had a little bit of a size advantage on them," Guido said. "We wanted to either post them up and go with our regular offense or if not offensive rebound like crazy."Nanticoke (1-2, 4-7) made a comeback attempt in the fourth led by Mike Malshefski, who finished with a game-high 27 points. The Trojans moved within 60-54 midway through the period on a three-pointer by Scott Stout. But like all game, Nanticoke just couldn't swing the momentum its way."We were down by six and cut it to four in the third quarter," Nanticoke coach John Beggs said. "Then we had a couple untimely turnovers, and that's been a problem with us this year. We seem to be turning the ball over at bad times."Hanover Area 89,Wyoming Seminary 42Hanover Area placed four players in double figures as the Hawkeyes scored their most points since the 2010-11 season.Jake Barber led the way with 24 and Tony Marcincavage added 20 for the Hawkeyes, whose 89 points were their most since defeating now-closed St. Michael's 93-24. Bob Kerestes had 18 and Tom Kriton added 14 as Hanover Area improved to 1-0 in Division III and 6-4 overall.Seth Callahan had 17 for Seminary (0-3, 2-7).Meyers 66, Northwest 23The Mohawks took control early and held Northwest scoreless in the third period to post a victory.Tyriek Steward led Meyers (3-0 Div. III, 7-5) with 17 points followed by Tyon Thomas and Ryan Wasley with eight each.Mitchell Stepanski had 13 for Northwest (0-2, 2-8).Crestwood 54, Coughlin 34Crestwood used a balanced attack to defeat Coughlin.Chris Fazzini led the way with 13 points, while Brady Gallagher and Luke Casey added nine each. Valley West improved to 2-2 in Division I and 3-9 overall.Tyler Evans scored 21 and Matt Dalo added 15 to pace Berwick (0-3, 1-9).Hazleton Area 81, Dallas 62Brett Barron scored all 18 of his points from behind the arc as Hazleton Area (3-0 Div. I, 8-2) defeated Dallas.Sal Biasi (17), Jon Fogarty (16) and Reynal Santana (15) also scored in double figures for the Cougars.Suk Mathon scored 22 and Chad DeBona added 14 for Dallas (0-3, 3-8).Pittston Area 66,Tunkhannock 54Tyler McGarry scored a career-high 36 points and Mason Gross added 18 for Pittston Area (3-0 Div. I, 8-3).Austin Yanora had 16 points and Sean Soltysiak added 14 for Tunkhannock (2-2, 5-6).
