OU - Texas Tech: Quarter Breakdowns

Source: Tulsa World, Okla.儲存Oct. 27--FIRST QUARTERTexas Tech 7 -- 7Oklahoma 0 -- 0Key play: A gadget beauty for the lead. Tech running back Kenny Williams takes a pitch from the OU 3-yard line, heads wide left, draws cornerback Zack Sanchez away from receiver Eric Ward, and lobs a touchdown pass to Ward all alone in the back of the end zone.Key stat: OU's 58 total yards. The Sooners have had the ball four times. They're trying to run the ball to take some load off Blake Bell, but it hasn't worked well. Bell, meantime, is 1-of-4 for 17 yards.Number to know: 1. Catches for Tech tight end Jace Amaro. For some reason, quarterback Davis Webb has only thrown to the Big 12's best pass-catcher twice. That's a break for OU, which has left Amaro open more than once.SECOND QUARTERTexas Tech 7 0 -- 7Oklahoma 0 14 -- 14Key play: The Sooners take their first lead by suckering Tech with a run formation. The Red Raiders put seven defenders near the line of scrimmage on a first down from the OU 24. Bell runs play-action. Jalen Saunders runs by cornerback Bruce Jones. Bell drops in a perfect pass, and Saunders outraces Davis and corner Olaoluwa Falemi to the end zone.Key stat: Saunders works over the Red Raiders for five catches, 136 yards and two touchdowns in the quarter. His three non-scoring grabs all convert third downs. With his help, Bell shakes off his slow start and is now 9-of-16 for 177 yards.Number to know: 96-19. OU's cumulative second quarter score this season. The Sooners have become notoriously slow starters, but they're at least able to shake loose and do some big things before halftime. Today is the latest example.THIRD QUARTERTexas Tech 7 0 17 -- 24Oklahoma 0 14 14 -- 28Key play: Trailing 24-21, OU runs a double reverse to Lacoltan Bester. He has themini storageoption of throwing deep to Bell, but decides to keep the ball. He also decides to reverse field from right to left side. He gets a Saunders/Sterling Shepard/Brennan Clay convoy and runs it in from 35 yards out.Key stat: Damien Williams' seven carries for 72 yards on the opening drive of the half, and 11 for 79 in the quarter. For all the fireworks that break out, OU's most consistent play is running Williams straight at the Tech defense. It works particularly well on the opening drive.Number to know: 39. OU has won 39 consecutive games after leading at halftime. Tech goes on a 17-point run in the quarter to threaten that streak. The Sooners answer with Bester's big play, but there's a sense they'll need a few more to keep their streak going.FOURTH QUARTERTexas Tech 7 0 17 6 -- 30Oklahoma 0 14 14 10 -- 38Key stat: OU's 526 yards of offense. The same group that wheezes to a 58-yard first quarter catches fire and wins a shootout many figured was out of their reach. The Sooners rush for 277 yards to complement Bell's 249 through the air.Key play: Trailing 28-24, the Red Raiders face third-and-10 from their 45. Webb tries to hit Ward on a deep slant but throws it a tad high and wide. Ward gets his hands on it, but instead of making the catch, he pops it up for safety Gabe Lynn to grab. The interception thwarts the drive, hands possession back to OU, and the Sooners drive to increase their lead to 35-24.Number to know: 3. OU needed some takeways against Amaro and the Tech offense. Cornerback Aaron Colvin provides an interception and a fumble recovery, while Lynn comes up big with his fourth-quarter pickoff.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 Tulsa World (Tulsa, Okla.)
